Here are some of the projects made by students from the Hand Sewing course in Summer 2023
Stuffed felt pincushion in the shape of a cloud:
Stuffed embroidered felt creatures (different decoration each side):
The painted background is the student's own design.
Fabric pocket:
This fabric pocket is embellished with a large button, and a decorative trim down each side.
This fabric pocket has a contrasting colour lining, but using the same print, and is embellished with an appliqué daisy.
Mug cosy with appliqué:
The choice of fabric with dandelion heads echoes the floral appliqué on the front of the piece. Note how this piece is co-ordinated with the fabric pocket above.
Embroidered mug cosy:
The use of satin stitch gives a sheen to the leaves, echoing the printed fabric. The word "tea" is embroidered on a leaf to hint at the preferred beverage!
Embroidered pictures:
The use of bullion stitch gives the effect of lush foliage and flowers. Stem stitch is used for the bark of the trees.
Note the use of metallic thread to highlight the water going under the bridge.
Sashiko embroidered picture (Mount Fuji):
Traditional sashiko embroidery uses white thread on indigo fabric; this interpretation uses different coloured threads on a white ground.
Embellishments - edging:
A delicate edging has been applied inside a fabric pocket as a decorative surprise!
Embellishments - sashiko embroidery:
Sashiko embroidery gas been used to accentuate the printed design on the fabric, and varying the thickness of the thread creates a three-dimensional effect, like contours on a landscape.
